When it comes to making movies, Pixar certainly knows their stuff. They have produced some of the most impressive movies in the world, and worked with some of the greatest animators in the business. However, in recent times, Pixar has used their power and their presence in the world for a new reason. They are now creating short films that have real meaning to the world, and ones that touch on issues that are plaguing society. In fact, their new film is winning the war on toxic masculinity.

Purl is a brand new movie created by Pixar for its SparkShorts program. It follows the life of a female ball of yarn as she finds herself in a new job. However, she soon realizes that she has been thrust into a hive of toxic masculinity. The men see her pink yarn and her desk decorations, and they immediately write her off. After all, she won’t be able to take part in their stereotypical jokes or get involved in their violent boardroom antics.

To try and fit in, Purl completely changes herself. She becomes one of the ‘bros’ and she loses sight of who she is. It’s not until another ball of yarn enters the workforce that she realizes she shouldn’t do this. She embraces who she is, and she sees the rest of the team change around her to be more inclusive.
Pixar have hit the nail on the head with Purl, but will it make a difference? Luckily, the media that one consumes in childhood often has a big impact on adult behavior, though it can’t be responsible for everything. That’s why it’s a great idea to watch this as a family.
